Luther Lackey
Clarksdale, Mississippi artist Luther Lackey
first showed his talents as a "Soul Country" artist before going "Blues" and
Southern Soul. Mister Zay scored a hit with the Lackey-penned "She Only Wants To
See My On Friday" while Lackey himself scored a hit himself with "Scared Of
Getting Caught". He next signed with Memphis-based Ecko Records, charting
regionally with "I Should've Stayed Scared" and "It Ain't Easy Being The
Preacher's Wife". The latter was a sequel to "Forbidden Love", a song he wrote
for artist Vick Allen. He's also written songs for "pretend" brother O.B.
Buchana.

**1/2 Oh,
Luther Lackey? Ain't he a country singer? Well, maybe he used to be
but now he's entered Southern Soul country on this new Goodtime
Records release. First up, "Hell In The Bed" has Lackey boasting of
his libidinal skills over a funky R & B groove. Hit potential alert.
Maybe his rap worked on the hoochie in "Freak At The House", a
slinky cheating number that follows. But on "Scared Of Getting
Caught" he turns down the hoochie 'cuz he doesn't know how to "cover
my tracks". But she won't give up easily and says Luther's woman can
even join in! Somebody call Springer. Other notables include the
midpaced "Thang Played With", Marvin Gaye-inspired "Call Your
Outside Woman" and "She Only Wants To See Me On Friday". But too
many weak tracks like "Lips That Don't Speak" & "Can I Tap That"
weigh down this 15-song LP. Quality control would have pared this
down to a tidy ten. Lackey wrote, produced and performed all the
music here and we can expect to hear a lot more from him in the
future. "Scared Of Getting Caught" was a considerable hit in the
Chitlin Circuit.

***
Three years is a longtime between cds in the modern "Southern Soul"
world, but Lackey hasn't dropped music under his own name since 2005
when he enjoyed a steady run with his hit single "I'm Scared Of
Gettin' Caught". In the meantime he's had songs appear on other
projects (most notably O.B. Buchana).
Though released on
Ecko Records this set was 100% written, played and produced by
Lackey himself. Overall it's more consistent than it's predecessor
(2005's "I'm Talking To You"), parsed out between Funk ("You
Dog (Ate My Cat)", "Leave Home Kind Of Love"), bumps ("I Don't Care
Who's Gettin' It"), slow R & B jams ("Number Two", "She's Tired Of
Me", title cut) and a lil' Blues ("New Orleans Blues").

1/2 Luther
Lackey is Southern Soul's "best kept secret" (it's a crime his greatness is so damn
secret, dabnabbit) and this may be the quintessential Lackey album, displaying
all his strengths from down home comedy ("Mama At The Drive Through
(skit)", "Mama Southern Soul", the title cut) to chitlin circuit
dance music ("Dip And Roll", "Get Out Of My Bed") to deep balladry
("I Thought The Baby Was Mine"). "Jody's Got My Problems" is a new
twist on the urban legend. Jody may have "got your girl and gone"
but he's in for some hell for doing so now that he's got Luther's
"problem" woman.
