Bobby "Blue" Bland   

One of the foremost icons of Soul Blues music, Bobby "Blue" Bland had a recording career exceeding 50 years and he maintained a steady following throughout thanks to his powerful squawl of a singing voice.

For all his promise, Bland's musical career ignited slowly. Singles for Chess in 1951 (produced by Sam Phillips) and Modern the next year bombed, but that didn't stop local DJ David Mattis from cutting Bland on a couple of 1952 singles for his fledgling Duke logo.

Bland entered the Army in late 1952 and returned to music three years later cutting savage Texas blues sides during the mid-to late '50s on the Duke label, notably "I Smell Trouble," "I Don't Believe," "Don't Want No Woman," "You Got Me (Where You Want Me)," the torrid "Loan a Helping Hand" and "Teach Me (How to Love You)." Bland's first chart success came in 1957 with "Farther Up the Road", which reached number 1 on the R&B chart and number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was followed by a series of hits on the R&B chart including "Little Boy Blue" (#10 R&B), "Cry Cry Cry" (#9 R&B), "I Pity the Fool" (#1 R&B in 1961), "Don't Cry No More" (#2 R&B) and "Turn On Your Love Light" (#2 R&B), which became a much-covered standard.

His last record to reach number 1 on the R&B chart was "That's the Way Love Is", in 1963, but he continued to produce a consistent run of R&B chart entries through the mid-1960s and early 70s. His highest-charting song on the pop chart, "Ain't Nothing You Can Do", peaked at #20 in 1964. In the end he had 23 Top Ten hits on the Billboard R&B chart.

In 1973 Bland became part of the ABC recording roster via Dunhill, which was distributed by ABC. Two of his best albums immediately followed. "His California Album" in 1973 and "Dreamer" the next year. He also released two live albums with B.B. King that were extremely well-received. In the 80s he also recorded with MCA before finding his last home with Malaco Records. Starting with the now classic "Members Only" Bland cut 9 more LPs for Malaco. His last being
"Blues At Midnight" in 2003.  Bland continued to perform up until his 2013 death. He is considered one of the great Blues singers in history.
