Archie Love

Living in Memphis, Home of the Blues, a musically enriched family of gospel singers, to include his father, sisters and brothers, church chorus, school bands, his own band, ‘Freedom Express”, and became the drummer for Soul Children at the age of 18.

While playing with The Freedom Express and working with The Soul Children, Archie also began touring with Denise LaSalle and J. Blackfoot in addition to working as a studio vocalist for numerous others such as the BAR KAYS.

Love formed the group “The Main Attraction”, which was signed by RCA Records and released one album.

The group was then signed to Motown and changed their name to The Right Choice for one self-titled album. They managed a #13 Billboard R & B hit with a cover of Al Green's "Tired Of Being Alone" . A hiatus followed after intensive touring with several members of the group agreeing to pursue solo projects.

Archie released a single called "Love Signs" and an EP entitled "All My Love" in the 90s but it wasn't until 2002's "Exposed" that he released a proper LP on his own.   While working in the studio he was approached by the Bar-Kays to be a lead vocalist, on their single “You're My Joy” and signed to the label JEA Music/Right Now, resulting in the well-received CD "Sincerely Yours". In 2008 he released another strong follow up called "Love Chronicles", followed by a self-released "Best Of" CD entitled "All About Love" in 2011.

***1/2 Love sang backup for years for J. Blackfoot but now he's the man on this poppin' new Southern Soul set. Blackfoot himself does make a welcome appearance to duet with Love on the smash opener, "Same Woman" ( lessened a bit by lazy lyrics like "we did the wild thing in the back"- c'mon now). But even better is the yearning, midtempo jam "Should've Been There For You" where Love displays a commanding vocal. It's a flawless, midtempo charmer produced by Tahl Cole. The rest of the disc credits Sam Fallie and Love himself. "Should've Been" plus 6 others were co-written by one E.Z. Rock (same DJ that worked with hip hopper Rob Base ("It Takes Two", "Joy & Pain")?). Rock also programmed 9 of the 10 tracks. The album is mostly hard-hitting dancers like "Hideaway", "I'm So In Love With You" and a sped up version of "Disco Lady" (also appearing as a remix), but Love also impresses on the slow tip with "Thanks For The Memories" and "Lovin' On Borrowed Time". He even tackles blues on "One More For The Lonely". While Archie's released at least two other difficult to find albums, "Exposed" and "All My Love", this one makes him a player.

2. I Take Back
3. Ain't Got Nothing on You
4. Done All That I Can Do
5. Help Me Get That Women

8. You're My Joy
9. Standing on the Edge
10. Keep Love Strong
11. Before a Judge
12. Dear Momma

****  In a word or two if you like J. Blackfoot you'll like raspy-toned Archie Love. Besides the vocal similarities the songs and tracks have the same clean and commercial sheen as Blackfoot's recent output. Love's a triple threat- singer, writer and producer and this is his best yet, establishing beyond a doubt he's a top Soul artist in the this genre. As regards "Love Chronicles"  I doubted any track could match his magnificent "Should've Been There For You" (from his previous LP "Sincerely Yours") but this set is more consistent than the previous. The luscious ballads "Love is A Wonderful Thing", "Before A Judge" & "Standing On The Edge" are up there (way up there...okay more, WAY).

He's already made Bigg Robb's "Tune Up" the hit it should've been. Other upbeat radio and/or club extracts might be "Help Me Get That Woman" (with J. Blackfoot & Omar Cunningham), "You're My Joy" (purely Al Green-inspired) & the okay bump "I Take It Back" but those ballads are the stuff! This is easily one of the best sets the Modern Soul/Southern Soul/Soul Blues genre has to offer for the '08. More records like this, the new Omar Cunningham, Kenne' Wayne, Stan Mosley and such and this music might get to that "next level" so many of us crow about.
